S2E10
- Spoiler:
-yup, Kirito, of course
-Oh god, when she said "it's the best vehicle but it's too hard to handle," I was expecting round two of "oh Kirito, you're so amazing you can drive things no one else can (but still appear in the game for some reason)" and I full-body cringed IRL.
-Her trigger finger's starting to fail her, even for shooting inanimate objects (though, also it could just be that her fine motor movement's still affected by the paralysis)
-Full-on panicking
-Being possessive of her rifle snaps her out of it enough to at least try and shoot
-this would be a super-exciting scene if we didn't have to pause so she can think about how amazing Kirito is and how he teaches her the true meaning of strength. It'd work a gazillion times better if they'd just subtly show us how she's inspired by his determination (and how wonderful and inspiring he was was a little more subtle) instead of loudly telling us yet again
-oh, the invisibility was a legit game skill
-her name's read in English even though it's written in Japanese? How would you even get other people to go along with that??
-this game's female clothing
-Kirito's scared he'll run and abandon her if they go after Death Gun together, the way the two of them are feeling so much the same things but at different angles is the best part of this season
-And the "now there are too many things I want to protect" is a nice callback to the way when he and Asuna were going into a fight the first time after getting together, SAO's danger was suddenly scary and heart-piercing in a way it hadn't been before
-they prevent people from being able to log out during the tournament? After SAO, people are still okay with that? Or even with the knowledge that the game makers can still prevent them from logging out whether or not they do it?? All my initial complaints about people being so fine with these games after SAO have come rushing back in full force
-If I were Kirito, having seen people kill themselves to actual death in a game and feeling the guilt for it, I don't know that I'd be able to go with "let's just no-consequence suicide our way out of the game/kill you to get you out of the game," even if there weren't the killer running loose to worry about
-feeling weak and pathetic to the point where she doesn't care if she dies
-if he's going to make her feel responsible for not hurting him through dying he'd better fucking protect her for the rest of her life
-murder-hands high fives?
-Kirito just stands there like ??? while she runs through an entire breakdown at him and sobs against his chest
-tries a hand on her shoulder, gets knocked away, so goes back to ??? I feel heartless for finding it funny how ??? he is.
-"I hate everything about you, which is why I'm going to sleep on your lap while a powerful murderer stalks us"
-They both finally open up about everything
-He wants to settle things with Laughing Coffin guy, but how can he when Death Gun can kill him but he can't kill Death Gun? Did his employer give him some kind of way to arrest/tag/identify people so they can't just log out and come back again any time they like?

- Spoiler:
Don't forget:
- He's hooked up to government machinery so presumably they're recording everything
- His job is to investigate the existence of Death Gun and they still don't actually know his user-name because of the cloaking, nevermind any other information that could lead to them catching him IRL.
- Death Gun's M.O. is to kill top players in public settings while they're oblivious to the danger, so Kirito's took it upon himself to try to prevent more murders in the most public setting in the game.

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
S2E11
- Spoiler:
- Sinon wanting to know how Kirito overcame it, Kirito didn't
- There it is, Kirito's trying to find their SAO name/username so they can get their IRL name/address
- Heart failure deaths instead of brain damage frying like OG SAO
- Sinon's half-naked e-but helps him think
- Sinister Death Gun, watching people over their shoulders to get their information
- Now the lizard's butt helped him think
- The VR in a deep dive is so good that if you live alone, you won't notice someone breaking into your house
- That line about "people dying because of not eating/etc" feels like it'd be suspect except I remember seeing a story about that happening to a kid playing WoW too long
- Being the black swordsman is still part of Kirito, being a "red player"/murderer is still part of Death Gun
- "Sinon, do you live alone." Death Gun did try to kill her with the Death Gun
- Her heartbeat shooting up
- Yui showing how frightening AI could be by finding all the info
- SAO Task Force
- Asuna's going to Kirito's real body in the hospital while Kirito is cuddling with a qtpie girl in another game :nono:
- Welp, now everyone can see Kirito macking on some chick in a cave

S2E11
- Spoiler:
-now that she's stopped being mad at him for seemingly having the answer to overcome it, she just wants him to have the answer to overcome it, but he doesn't either
-I've been wondering this whole time if Death Gun's just got an accomplice who drugs the targets with something that causes heart failure IRL at the right moment (but is also untraceable, b/c presumably they autopsied the victims pretty thoroughly, so didn't seem too realistic, but Kirito's train of thought suggests he's gonna prove me wrong)
-I lost it when Kirito's deeply thinking, then the camera pauses on Sinon's ass and he suddenly has a realization, BUTT CRACK IS THE ANSWER!
-Holy shit, I had it right the first time, the evil plan was politely asking for their IRL information, I did not see that coming
-"so he'd use the mantle to peek at the terminal" again with the camera looking at Sinon's ass, their juxtaposition is hilarious
-man, so not only do VR games have a history of mass murder brain frying, the person playing them is so unconscious that they wouldn't notice a break-in and being murdered, and heart attacks just from not eating and sleeping are common enough that murder wouldn't be noticed?? This fucking industry needs so much regulation!
-Death Gun can't let go of being someone who kills people in game, just like they're all left with traces of the people they play as
-someone's probably in Sinon's home waiting for the right time to murder her while she's physically incapable of waking up, this is horrifying
-Kirito always leaving his harem out of things instead of all protecting each other
-Running to protect Kirito IRL, but no one thinks to check out who he's hanging out with on the livestream and look up where she is
-once Sinon understands that all she has to do to survive is win at playing the game, with no mysterious "game killing is real killing" aspect, she's back on top of things, it's back to being the world where she can be a sniper consequence-free again
-it's good for their plan that only the visuals are being recorded, but man, that makes it way worse for Kirito's relationship
-Sure, Sinon, being thought to be a lesbian will definitely makes your life easier around bullies
-He misread Sterben as Steven

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
- Spoiler:
I didn't really encounter any situations where I'd expect I'd have seen it if they were or weren't about the gay part specifically when I was in Japan, so my anecdata's limited, but I'd be surprised if guys who catcall or otherwise loudly/rudely hit on or comment about girls would suddenly become super-polite about it if they thought they were lesbians, and that's definitely a thing in even in polite RL Japan (though I'd say it's on the low end and maybe a little more limited in situations than in a lot of places here, secret groping is the thing I've heard more complaints about). The kind of reactions we see Sinon and presumed-female-Kirito getting aren't operating on politely-asking-out-because-maybe-they'd-like-to-go-out-with-you rules already, so "oh, she has a girlfriend and maybe isn't into men at all" seems unlikely to trigger the politeness factor.

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
S2E12
- Spoiler:
- A mystery person not showing up on radar
- They can use other players as decoys because Death Gun probably can't kill them for real now that they've potentially figured out his trick
- And the possibility that multiple people are helping out Death Gun shuts that idea down
- There's a common thread between Kirito, Sinon and the Laughing Coffin, even though they've been "released" from their issues, they keep living that way
- Sinon's gonna take out the other player because not even Kirito is likely to be good enough to do it, and the only way to protect them is to eliminate them from the game
- Death Gun's sniper shot takes out part of his hair
- AND THE TOWER
- Sinon blows Yamikaze away
- The bullets fucking slide by each other and wipe out each other's sniper rifles
- Oh man, that slide-by where Death Gun stabs Kirito
- Asuna hesitates for a second before switching to Kirito's IRL name when talking to the nurse
- Asuna recognizes the sword style and Nurse-chan let's them know that "Sterben" isn't a mis-spelling but a German medical term for DEATH
- It's so interesting how Kirito and Death Gun are both sort of implying that the return to the real world and survival of the death game have kind of changed them, like the SAO versions of themselves were the real, peak selves and everything else is just a facsimile
- Fufufufu you'll never remember my name, and I'll let you know the reason why and maybe jog your memory!
- "You never knew my name." Mannnnnn, that's like a potential Spider-Man not stopping Uncle Ben's killer kind of deal
- Kirito losing a sword-fight because Death Gun, a red player, keeps his PKing skills sharp whereas Kirito only fought to survive, and now that the Death Game is over, his skillset and preparedness isn't what it used to be.

That was an exciting one!
(Also, all the episode names read like they chose words by randomly spinning a wheel, Bullet of Death, Phantom of Guns, Death of Blood, Phantom Bullets, Bullet of Phantoms...)
- Spoiler:
-ohshit, does Death Gun have an in-game accomplice too? Maybe the harem can all somehow break into the game and ride in as the cavalry to take them out
-oh shit, he's got multiple out-of-game accomplices too?? I guess Laughing Coffin always did tend to set up as a group
-now that they've been caught on camera getting snuggly, he's sticking to fist-bumps
-asking her gun to give her the strength
-that close dodge
-FUCK, HER SCOPE
-and his whole gun
-SWORD GUN
-they can talk to Yui by phone even outside of the game now!
-the damage to his name tag, that's a cool little way of showing it
-of course Death's Gun's got a dramatic name after all
-"you've taken in too much of the real world's rotten air"
-he didn't want to know Death Gun's name before, I love it, of course Death Gun's such a self-important asshole that he'd build a massive, murder-y grudge off that
-Come on, Kirito, get it together!!

Also
- Spoiler:
- Death Gun carries the darkness of SAO
- Thissss swordfight
- Kirito starting to remember
- Speaking Death Gun's name makes him slightly flinch and miss
- Fucking Sinon is NO SCOPING with a sniper rifle from long distance
- The Phantom Bullet. She's not actually shooting, just giving Kirito an opening
- Aincrad Era Kirito appears for a moment
- The real battle is over, but they still have to complete the tournament
- That feel when Sinon will never whisper her real name and address into your ear
- Yeah Kirito, you dick, tell her your real name
- That feel when Sinon will never plop a grenade down into your hands and turn it on
- Tension while she's searching the house for intruders
- Eyyyyy beta orbiter-kun
- E-eyyyyy, beta orbiter-kun, maybe don't forcibly hug her on her bed
- Jams a syringe up against her while his hand is on her exposed knee. DESU GUN
- Hand going up her shirt, yeurghhhhh
- He's mad because XeXeed spread false info and then gamed the system differently to become the top player
- He's into her because she killed someone for real
- Sinon telling Asada-chwann that she can do something about this
- Him yelling "Asada-san" got a little cartoony there (I thought she would've gone for her gun too)
- Eyyyyy Kirito showed up anyways
- (By the way, if you didn't catch it, it plainly showed Shinkawa's face at the end of the first episode as a player who was either Death Gun or showing Death Gun's targets, and the intro has him reaching up his hand and then burning up and Death Gun's standing there. I caught the former the first time I saw it so I never did fall for the twist, but having multiple Death Gun partners sorta threw a wrench in the obvious twist as well)
Also
- Spoiler:
The next episode is the last one of the arc. Multiple choices where to go next.
Choice #1) Stop watching SAO (either for now or for good). No worries either way.
Choice #2) The Calibur Arc of Season 2. It's three episodes of filler and mostly centers around Alfheim which we skipped, so I'm assuming you're not gonna go for this one.
Choice #3) The Mother's Rosario Arc, the final arc of season 2. This one is the most emotional and maybe the most-unlike SAO. It's that kind of arc where it's so different that some people call it their favourite arc. Mostly doesn't focus on Kirito either.
Choice #4) SAO Alternative: Gun Gale Online. A 12 episode anime based on spin-off novels that were written by the Kino no Tabi/Kino's Journey author. It features a different cast of characters playing another BoB tournament. This is wildly entertaining and may actually be the best overall series or season of SAO, though nothing nearly as interesting as Aincrad in season 1.
Choice #5) SAO Alicization. This is really slow, Alicization as a whole is as big as Season 1 and 2 combined, so they take their time in developing everything. I did find that the big moments and deeper plot delivers. It mostly focuses on Kirito and a new character with cameos by the other characters here and there. This surprisingly may be the least Gary-Stu that Kirito gets, as most of his advantages are really just built around him recognizing the situation he's in when no one else does. This is on hiatus for the moment, similar to Attack on Titan Season 3, we're getting the next season of this sometime in October I think.

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
S2E13
- Spoiler:
-Sinon sitting and recapping to herself while Kirito desperately fights
-Glad to hear they've put some safety features in to prevent players from dying of thirst at least
-aww, Yui telling Asuna to hold his hand, and her putting the phone under his hand for Yui to 'hold' it too
-as Death's hits start to connect, he remembers him, and that brings Death Gun to a halt. What is this, Rumplestilkskin?
-Sinon manages to get a line on him, no scope!
-PHANTOM BULLET!
-HAND GUN! GOT HIM! With the hand that Asuna and Yui are holding, nice touch
-that moment where you see his normal/Aincrad self as he carves Death Gun through
-cut completely in half and he still manages last words
-Wasn't there an unknown accomplice still in the game and uncounted, though? What happened to that? Did I misunderstand?
-God, that'd be terrifying going to wake up knowing someone who was about to kill her is probably hopefully gone
-her feel-good happy solution is to suicide it out of there together, meanwhile he's probably got PTSD about in-game suicides
-the crowd's weirdly happy about what seems like it would have been a cop-out end to the fight, given that they didn't know the rest of the story
-Sinon terrifiedly checking her closet
-the friend came to check on her. Maybe suspiciously fast. But who cares, he brought cake!
-ugh, he is one of those people who can't hold off for two seconds without spilling crush-feelings everywhere
-oh jeez, that lighting change, he's going to be one of Death Gun's accomplices, isn't he FFS, they couldn't have any cute girl who's ever interacted with Kirito have any potential competition whatsoever without making him creepily, slaveringly evil, and of course we're going to have to have a near-rape scene for Kirito to rush in and rescue her from.
-Yep, there it is. Booooooring.
-that is a very badly run hospital if a teenager can get hold of a paralysis/murder drug just because their family runs it. They're supposed to track these things!
-oh man, only he liked her to begin with because she killed someone, poor Sinon
-drifting in an ice world, game-Sinon appears to encourage her
-GO SINON
-but of course Kirito has to rescue her at the end. Also, holy fuck did they go over-the-top on turning him evil, that bit where he's bug-eyed and screaming her name over and over.
- Spoiler:
Hmm... I think maybe I'll take a break from SAO to slow down my schedule a little, and maybe go back to #3 or 4 later. A lot of what really grabbed me about the series, the societal and personal reactions to living in a game, is mostly finished, but there's enough interesting stuff enough that I think I'll be happy to go back to it later on.

S2E14
- Spoiler:
- Kirito losing a fight IRL
- Welp RIP Kirito
- WHAM with a stereo
- Nurse-chan forgot to take off his electrode and it JUST HAPPENS to save his life
- Btw I ship Sinon and Kirito more than I do Asuna and Kirito
- Probs just shoot her, Sinon
- Imagine being such an asshole that you show up with your motorcycle and leather jacket outside your female friend's school and not even realize how much of a douchebag you are
- The older brother/SAO Death Gun getting increasingly more and more Laughing Coffin in real life as their plan becomes plausible
- The SAO Death Gun had become so warped by being a Player Killer in SAO that real life murdering was the same as the game to him
- Even Kirito feels like he left a piece of himself back in Aincrad that he's missing in the real world
- "Have you ever wished to go back?" Oh, shit
- Eyyyyy, introducing Sinon to the harem
- Berserker Healer Asuna
- Eyyyy, we stalked your IRL shit out
- I do like how Kirito says that it's not wrong for her to want to punish herself for killing a dude, but it's also her right to accept that what she did saved some lives too, especially because Kirito himself went through that in SAO
- (I also like how they made sure that Sinon-chwan's tears were dropping off her chin because she wears glasses)
- Sinon lets go of her rifle as the little girl grabs Shino's hands, shut up, I know it's corny

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
S2E14
- Spoiler:
-Smash him in the head!
-Kirito's lying there struggling and gasping as if he's poisoned, but it bounced off his heart monitor electrode and didn't even inject! Dude's way too susceptible to the placebo effect (and I say that as someone who's been kept up multiple nights by thinking there was caffeine in my uncaffeinated drink)
-these bullies go from "how are they scary" to pointing guns pretty fast
-starts freezing up, but when the gun jams she grabs the bully's wrists and takes it
-that totally polite, gentle burn about "you have to take off the safety"
-she just hands it back, and walks off with a "later." I love how understated she is about being badass, like they're so much nothing to her now that it's not even an icy "you're beneath me," kind of reaction, it's just totally casual and polite like buying a candybar at the store.
-Kirito obliviously shows up with a cool motorbike
-there isn't much point to all this aftermath info-dumping, I feel like we already had all the answers we needed about how and why and who.
-It's in bad taste to ask if he wants to go back to SAO
-virtual, reality, no difference
-Death Gun still has to have the last word
-Bringing her for introductions like "Sinon, this is my harem, congrats, you're part of it now." (Doesn't even mention that Asuna's his girlfriend-wife, though ) Honestly, I like Sinon and Kirito better as platonic-with-a-little-extra-tension than ever really seeing them as that much couple potential, though that might be because I'm already aware he's already semi-married semi-with-a-kid so I never expected it to go anywhere. But I think he and Asuna have a better balance, while Sinon and Kirito push each other in interesting ways but I can't see them just hanging out that much or anything
-Liz saying she's glad to meet another female player IRL when basically the only people she apparently knows are Kirito, Klein and a bunch of female players They need to decide whether the harem members have a life outside of Kirito & co or not. (Also, now that I think about it, what happened to the rest of Klein's team, he just abandoned them to join the harem, too!)
-That's pretty shitty for Kirito to just go ahead and tell the others Sinon's confidential trauma, regardless of if his intentions are good. And then while she's in the middle of hesitantly meeting a bunch of strangers, suddenly tell her they know her darkest secrets.
-Aww, it's going to be someone she saved
-But Liz and Asuna don't have any unique finding-people skills that he doesn't have, he apparently just involved them b/c he was too lazy or impatient to do it all himself
-I do like that he's passing on the permission that he'd needed himself, to remember the people she saved
-"Shino-oneesan" on the picture
-Her game self lets go of the rifle and her real self takes the kid's hands

- So yeah, Sinon's probably my fav character (outside of GGO Alternative), top waifu (outside of GGO Alternative) and Death Gun is probably my fav (sentient) villain (Aincrad is best villain, I guess that's kind of Dr Kayaba but Heathcliff wasn't really a great character design or interesting character otherwise and I think the Kayaba reveal weirdly made him a little less hateable)

- Spoiler:
- So far, she's definitely mine too, she had so much more development than anyone else, and the mix of badass and struggling to figure out how to be that badass works really well. And Aincrad as the arc villain is more meaningful than Kayaba. So 2x that.

Just watched the Ordinal Scale movie
Was expecting it to be a throwaway, instead it added to the lore of the series, found an emotional way to talk about Aincrad, and had awesome fight scenes ;_;

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
S2E18
- Spoiler:
-hanging out in the game world to do their homework. NEEEEEERDS
-I feel like Asuna always has an overly sweet & gentle way of talking after Season 1, and she acts so generically sweet and motherly, feels like they just slotted her in the "generic girlfriend" slot because Liz is taking the "feisty" slot. Hopefully she'll get more of her personality back if she's getting more screentime in this arc. And I'm not even getting a sense of whassername, his real-life sister,'s personality at all here
-I love that even the OP animation treats Klein as part of the harem
-Agil and his wife being separated for a year by the game and not knowing if he'd ever come back
-I find it weird that Asuna's being mostly a mage but then jumping into the battle with a sword at the end, it shows that they know being a back-row mage doesn't fit with her character/skills but they're trying to force it to work anyway.
-Only Asuna gets a key. Sorry, Kirito, if you break up you lose the house.
-randomly out of nowhere "by the way, did you hear about this person who's presumably going provide the plot for this entire arc?" So lazy!
-Looks like Asuna's parents are still trying to marry her off
-No Sinon? I guess she didn't fully join the harem social group, she's just a guest like Klein. That's too bad, I'd like to see more of her.
-Liz and Leafa (forgotten her real name) fought the guy yesterday?! That would have made an actually relevant and natural way to introduce it!
-You can bet skills?
-They let Kirito lose?! This guy is clearly invincible or otherwise superhuman. Oh wait, no, Kirito doesn't fight for real anymore unless it's more than a game, that's probably a good way to let other people do something worthwhile occasionally without ever threatening his sacred Gary Stu status, the equivalent of what they're doing in this episode of having him be asleep all the time so we can focus on the girls.
-is the dark-haired girl in the ending (and I think the op) gonna be Kirito in disguise again? I don't trust dark-haired girls anymore! Wait, no, looks like it might be a version of Yui.
I'm mixed on this so far. It's fun to get some time with the harem just hanging out, but the writing's lazy and it feels like they sacrificed the characters' personalities for the sake of maximum comfiness, everyone felt too bland to support an entire episode with no stakes. And I miss all the stuff from the first arc about actually living in a game, how people form a society there and the way they use the game elements, that was really what made this show interesting to me, without that, being set in a game just means you get multiple bland fantasy settings and any game elements only to remind you there's zero stakes unless they do big plot shenanigans to force them.

S2E18
- Spoiler:
- What kind of fucking dorks spend their time hanging out onli- oh
- Comfy as fuck
- Razzling Agil about his online shop
- Agil definitely played Vanilla WoW back in the day
- Everyone else was fighting for something they had left in the real world, Asuna was a badass just because
- Dr Kayaba wanted to go back to that castle in the sky, Kirito and Asuna wanted to go back to that cabin in the castle in the sky
- I like how Agil's reacting like these kids holding hands is the most awkward and uncomfortable thing, like you goddamn kids stop showing affection for each other, dammit
- The music while they're taking down the giant boss <3
- Still Asuna The Flash
- Floor 22 ;_;
- Snowy fantasy cabin
- The Absolute Blade, hell yeah
- Don't even have wifi in Kyoto, what a shame
- I wonder if she sizes up her suitors by how quickly they would've died in SAO just by looking at them
- Fucking every day at 3:00 they stand at the duel island and take on all comers. Cool as shit
- Gambling sword skills, hell yeah
- Kirito already lost to Zekken
- Kirito's never going to fight for real in a normal game again, too hard to replicate when you've been through the real thing
- Is it a former SAO player?
- There's no way they're a former SAO player because they would've gotten the Dual-Sword Skill, which IIRC was gifted to the most skilled swordsman in the game. Kirito didn't lose because he took it easy, he lost because he would've lost anyways and recognized it. Gary Stu knocked down a peg
Yeah so in particular, this arc is not about a death game or "I could die" kind of stakes, it's about something else and it does take a little bit to get to that something else (I figured it out a bit early while I was watching). It's probably the most different from what SAO usually is.
re: Asuna, I think she was always generally sweet and motherly (which is part why she's ultimate waifu), most of what we saw of her in original SAO was her being a hardass to Kirito because she didn't like how she felt he was shirking his responsibilities to the player-base at large by not joining a guild or taking a more proactive leadership role in the clearing party. If you look at what they're showing us of her personal life now, she's a rich girl who was a lot of responsibility to the family and people around her. We kind of lose that hard-ass edge because she has no reason to be that person to him anymore and we're mostly left with the sweet but generic side of her.

Re: Sword Art Online Anime [Half Recommendation... but some of it is Full Recommendation]
- Spoiler:
- Too much motherliness kind of destroys that to me, I'm a grown adult and not a Freudian, I don't want a mother for a waifu. They spent the majority of the first arc showing one side of her, and then they bait-and-switched us to only really showing the other side. (to be fair, even within the original, her introduction made her out to be fairly different from what she actually turned out to be like, she came off as super-independent and uncomfortable with people when she and Kirito first teamed up by default, but that wasn't really present after that even when she and Kirito were still in conflict. So I feel like they've always kind of pushed personalities into what's easiest for any given segment of the story to some degree) And sweet is a good thing if there's a lot of other personality there, but without anything else, it's just too bland. She comes off like she could be any character.
I think they could have kept some of that hard-ass edge just by having her be a little sharper and expect a lot of herself and other people, even if she's not specifically giving Kirito a hard time because they're in 'happy newlywed 15-yr-olds with a 10-yr old ai baby' mode; and she's being sweeter than she needs to be with the others even for something that's meant to be a maximum easygoing, chill harem of friends, it comes off like they're scared that if they give anyone too much personality, it won't be comfy enough anymore, but they could have a lot more edge and even a little lowkey conflict and still be completely gentle and happy. The other girls, too. The less is happening, the more it needs personality to be fun.
