Winter Anime 2019 Season
The Link
We're about 2 weeks out of the first series of the new season starting. As always, I will attempt to control and shrink my watching habits and likely fail at it. Here's my list so far, it's mostly things that are continuing or getting a second season. I'm going to probably sample most things at least
EndlessA. Pokemon
EB. One Piece
Continuing 1. Gegege no Kitaro
C2. Captain Tsubasa 2018
C3. Layton Mystery Detective Agency
1. Black Clover
2. Ace Attorney Season 2
3. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind
4. Morose Mononokean/Fukigen on Mononokean
5. Kakegurui xx
6. Mob Psycho 100
7. Yakusoku no Neverland/The Promised Neverland
8. Hinomaru Sumo
9. Karakuri Circus
10. Sword Art Online: Alicization
FuckIalreadyfailed 11. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime
List is already buckling under horrific pressure. Gegege has probably overstayed its welcome for me at this point (last season focused more on western demons and mythological creatures instead of Yokai), the Morose Mononokean is chill but maybe not chill enough to keep in such a packed season. The Layton Mystery Detective Agency is cute as fuck (Katrielle Layton is 2D-waifu as fuck) but it's also somewhat overstayed its welcome and at this point the Professor Layton/Luke storyline is the one I'm most interested in. Ace Attorney too has been stretching out adapting the third game by inserting anime-only filler in the middle. I may just watch specific Ace Attorney and/or Layton episodes to make room on the list (he says as he's watching Lady Layton)
The only one of those that isn't a continuation is The Promised Neverland, which I am interested as fuck in that one. Black Clover was basically cooked up in a lab of tropes to replace Naruto in Shonen Jump (and doesn't do a bad job of it at all), The Promised Neverland organically became one of the best-selling manga in that magazine (e-zine?). I don't really know what it's about but I'm hype for it.
Boogiepop and Dororo have my first-blush interest.

Re: Winter Anime 2019 Season
Hmm, there's a fair number that look fine but I'm not super-excited about anything other than there's a Golden Kamuy OAV, so I'm not sure if I'll land up watching anything or not.
Revisions is probably the one that looks most interesting to me, but I can be iffy on mecha, it depends on what the fighting's like. Boogiepop looks fairly interesting in spite of the dumb name and hat. Promised Neverland concept looks great but I haaaate the character designs/art style enough that I'm not sure I'd be able to get over it.

Boogiepop was like... they were telling a supernatural story, but they removed all the exciting parts and you just saw things from the point of view of a side-character who never saw anything happen.
The Cost of Smiles was okay, generic mecha anime, buuuuut the ending was pretty good

The Princess thinks everything is peaceful but they're just lying to her because she's so adorable, there's already a war raging at their border.

I guess you can't trust that a creator who thinks that hat is awesome can tell what's awesome

Re: Winter Anime 2019 Season
God damn, this week's episode of Gegege no Kitaro
- Spoiler:
It centered around a Yokai who would steal corpses from funerals and then eat them. In the modern era he's gotten too old/slow to effectively steal anything, but Rat Man (a half-human/half-rat who always hatches exploitative get-rich-quick schemes) offers him a set-up. Rat-Man opens up a business where he'll "dispose" of the corpses of people for a fee (a middle-aged poor man wants his recently passed away mother's corpse to disappear without announcing her death so he can still collect her pension, a company President hits someone while he was drunk-driving and needs the body to disappear, some woman gets in an argument with her husband and kills him etc etc etc) and then the yokai gets to eat them.
Eventually the yokai is full but business is booming. Also the Yokai complains that the corpses are lacking a certain "spice", that being the trauma of their loved ones seeing the corpse being stolen. He reveals he has body-switching powers and switches with Rat-Man, but his body also sucks and after some body-switcharoos, ends up in the main character Kitaro's body.
They all fight but he wins, then he takes Kitaro's father, Daddy Eyeball (a tiny person whose head is an eyeball) and squeezes him to death. He tosses the tiny body into a mochi mix (the only other thing he eats) and says he's going to eat him, but it turns out Daddy Eyeball is still alive and the mochi bursts into a bunch of eyeballs that suffocate Kitaro's body unconscious and lets Daddy Eyeball set everyone's bodies back the way they should be.
The Yokai escapes, and bumps into the pension-fraudster, who's running from the police.
At the end of the episode, you see images of Tokyo at night while overhearing thoughts of hatred and murder, people wanting other people to die (angry spouses, jealous lovers, etc). The fraudster is standing at a full crosswalk, turns to the camera, and gives a sinister smile, implying the yokai is now a human cannibal.
This is a Sunday Morning children's cartoon.

Re: Winter Anime 2019 Season
Revisions dropped all at once netflix style. It was okay but didn't really blow me away either. The 3D anime style has really improved since Ajin and that was maybe the most impressive part of it.
If you're gonna keep up with it but just watch it weekly, I will too. I may still watch it anyways but I think it's one I could easily drop too.

I probably won't bother if you didn't think it was that great. Maybe I'll try an ep of The Promised Neverland and see if I can get over the character designs.

re: Neverland, so far it definitely feels like Episode 2 or 3 is when things will get going/it will round into what it's supposed to be, Episode 1 was very much about setting the stage.

Cost of Smiles/Egao no Daika is something I think I'll continue with. Solid mecha anime that had two really good plot twists at the ending of the first two episodes
Also Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka because holy shit

Really @Magical Girl Spec-ops Asuka? The trailer looked like it was going to be playing it serious!

It's violently serious, but with anime girls wearing frilly magical girl outfits fighting cutesy stuffed animals... and then experiencing PTSD over them.

Re: Winter Anime 2019 Season
The Promised Neverland 1 - I hate the character style soo much, those cutesy overly squat faces with the features all squished together in the middle like they're 4-yr-olds. But it was bearable enough to finish. Characters didn't especially grab me, and I found the setting-establishing that took up most of the episode pretty boring and mostly unnecessary, but that ending! It does seem like it'll get going now, and the premise is really promising, so I think I'll keep watching a bit at least.
I was curious enough about hilariously serious stuffed animal-based PTSD that I checked it out too, the character introductions were totally stock and lazy, but it does sort of grab you, the trauma and brutality that they're playing straight with the totally incongruous cutesiness of the magical girl stuff.

Yep. I don't know if they can maintain it going forward, but it was sort of like Magical Girl Raising Project or a bit like Madoka where the contrast between cutesy Magical-Girlness and the quite serious subject matter makes it interesting to see.

Re: Winter Anime 2019 Season
Neverland 2
- Spoiler:
- They have to smile to survive
- Their clothing is white so any traces of dirt are seen on it
- Shipped out as meat based on their test scores
- Welp, Mama can track them
- Their lives are so normal that they have to exam every facet of it closely because the system is already in place to preserve their health and prevent their escape
- And she specifically fucking showed it to everyone so they would get the hint, fuck
- The black-haired kid already knows what's up, I bet. He's the one who's a master of strategy and tactics, he likely already sees all the mechanisms in place to keep them where they are
- JESUS FUCKING CHRIST THE LEAN-IN
- "I wonder what Conny's doing right now." JESUS CHRIST EMMA
- Is Emma trying to see if Mama has any guilt by saying things like this?
- Hrmmm, Ray only knew something was up, but easily believes it because Norman came up with it
- Outside is a demon world, they can't escape
- YADA, everyone goes even if it's impossible
- Norman's the coward and afraid of dying, Ray sort of is but recognizes the situation for what it is and wants the best chance of surviving, Emma wants to save them all
- And just as they gain an ally, Mama brings in a new ally of her own

Re: Winter Anime 2019 Season
Yakusoku no Neverland 2
- Spoiler:
-the tension of having to pretend everything's normal now that everything's so sinister
-Mmmm, smart-kid's brains
-wait, can Norman sense demons?
-Mama showing them the tracking device purposely so they'll know they can't escape
-Norman's a little too good, that he's so confident he'd have found bugs if there were any from only looking for as short a time as they've had, but it's excuseable because it seems like something they need to establish for the audience to know what the parameters of the problem and would have hard time doing otherwise.
-ohshit, Mama's noticed something's up
-Emma faking the hell out of it and bringing up Conny like she's trying to pressure Mama right back into giving something away
-Norman just happens to know lock-picking
-Ray wanting to leave behind the kids who can't realistically make it
-it's quite tense watching them standing around conspiring, I keep wanting to yell at them to pretend to be playing instead of being so obvious
-outside's probably a demon's world, but Norman didn't want Emma to realize it
-Emma's not wrong that they have to try to rescue everyone and create a space for humans outside, but I find her a little annoying the way she doesn't really react to the idea that it's impossible or seriously consider it as a risk, just insists they'll do it anyway through the power of determination or something, it's a character trait that bugs me in a lot of kids' anime
-and the sensible guy thinks it's fine because he wants Emma to be smiling, someone save me from the anime character tropes
-also, maybe they should yell a little less while secretly plotting?
-"I've always achieved everything I tried to do." You don't think maybe there's a difference between winning at tag against other 11-yr-olds in your orphanage/child-farm and escaping into a world of demons with a bunch of kindergarteners with tracking device?
-"we've both completely lost it. You can't let us do this on our own, right?" "damn."
-enter enemy #2

Dororo ep 3 = MAN, this is kind of Berserk but with an eastern flavour (and in the 1960s so it probably influenced Berserk)

Magical Girl Spec-ops Asuka 2
After another episode, I'm feeling unenthused, there's something in it that's got a real energy, but it's smothered in so much anime trope-ness and cardboard characters, and my tolerance for that is limited, so I'd rather use it on on Neverland or more SAO unless I have reason to think otherwise. Also the cheesiness is a lot.
- Spoiler:
-that empty fridge and a single microwave burrito
-everything seems like a lie after the girl's brush with death, and it seems to almost let her see past Asuka's magic, but it's probably just recognizing someone else who lives in that world she just got a glimpse into
-all the blushing and thinking about how pretty girls are, I'm getting some definite gay vibes here
-"you were pretty into that torture" as coworker smalltalk
-"we're very bad Magical Girls" some scenes in this show feel like someone on the writing staff is one step away from just saying fuck it and turning it into porn, especially given the costumes.
-talking the friend down from a flashback/panic attack from the sound of a police car
-a black market for the remaining evil stuffed animals
-the magical girl elements in this show are almost agonizingly cheesy even though you know it's on purpose
-wow, that bear half-melted and covered in boils from the injection is going to be in my nightmares tonight
-that sudden stab through the eye
-"you're a terrible person, making me into a Magical Girl and then running away."
-whispering about whether you'll get taken away for having a video of a Magical Girl

Re: Winter Anime 2019 Season
Yeah, it's something I might've kept watching if I have nothing else to do, but I do have other things to do <_<
Neverland 3
Neverland 3
- Spoiler:
- Ray ofc sees another adult being added to the situation as an advantage, another source of information
- "Human technology is too shitty for that to work."
- Oh man, sneakily checking the new 1-year old for evidence of the tracking implant
- Yeah, Mama and Krone talking out loud is more chances for them to slip up
- Her "adorable" children
- I can't tell if Mama is over-confident in her abilities to weed out the problem children or if she's trying to cover for her record
- And Sister Krone is fucking cracked o.o
- And gunning for Isabella's head, oh boy
- Singing your intentions loudly is probably not a good way to keep a secret. That's probably the one thing that's pretty "AGHHH" about this series is that everyone talks in normal voices out loud as if no one is going to hear them
- Ray's hardcore, he's already figured out that they have to kill both Sisters to stop the alarm being raised as they escape
- Maybe don't speak about things out loud too glasses girl who isn't in on it
- "His" feast, so I'm assuming since this is demons, it's Satan?
- Kids, you have to be sneakier!
- Using tag to train their physical abilities up better
- "Everyone, try to run away from me." Oh god, is she going to show them up?
- She recognizes the fake tracks and how silent they are. The kids are learning how the adults will move but at the same time letting the adults know they're getting better at hiding
- Cutesy leaves to draw them out
- Mannnn, chasing Emma through the forest
- Sister Krone letting the kids know their own weaknesses
- "If you saw the harvest that day, I'm on your side." SAYING IT OUT LOUD
- She breaks for Norman knowing his physicality won't last and assuming Ray will eventually give up
- But the two of them did manage to hold out
- I'm assuming the glasses girl/Gilda I think was the one in the bushes spying on them and now Krone just realized she's the weak link

Re: Winter Anime 2019 Season
Neverland 3
- Spoiler:
-I like the way they strip down every new thing that happens and mine it for information to try and build up a picture of an entire world they can't see
-"Thank you for the opportunity to return to this side." Implications for what the existence of humans on the other side is like
-"it should be easier than getting perfect scores every morning," does that mean that the adults are chosen from kids with perfect scores?
-Mama doesn't seem to know yet that Ray's joined them
-assistant plotting (loudly) against Mama, and also is a few dolls short of a tea-party. I'm finding it too much how over-the-top they're playing her, it kind of interferes with the ominous tension of everything else to have this one ridiculous bit stuck in like this
-Ray's already figured they'll have to kill the adults
-Emma is sure not being careful about letting that other kid find out
-ominous reflecting eyeglasses is not a good sign
-it's for some evil god, I guess?
- if they're suddenly constantly teaching the younger kids that intensively, it seems pretty likely the kids would land up mentioning it to the adults (and if they weren't, it doesn't seem like it'd be different enough from their normal activities to be effective training)
-Sister whateverhernameis joins in and the game becomes a hunt
-the tension keeps getting ruined for me by how over-the-top she is, how can you take it seriously when she's using silly voices and spinning around all the time
-Noooo, Emma, don't go all out to try and save those kids, that's just letting her know more about you!
-letting them know she knows their weaknesses
-Getting it out there that she knows about the harvest and claiming to be on their side, she might be weird and annoying, but she's tricky, too
-Way to go Ray and Norman!
-Emma's supposed to be decently smart even though she works harder for her scores than the other two, but whenever they're planning she spends the entire time asking questions and never draws any conclusions herself, it makes her come across as kind of dumb instead of just naive
-traitor among the kids, and if it's glasses-girl, Emma's already practically spilled the beans to her
