Summer Anime 2019

We're about two weeks out.

Dr Stone (apparently an up-and-coming shonen manga) and Vinland Saga (because a line on wikipedia says "The panel composition, realistically barbaric violence, and attention to detail in constructing the setting were praised and compared with those found in Kentaro Miura's long-running series Berserk.") are definitely on the list to try out.

I'm sure I'll find one or two to latch onto also but I think I may actually go light this summer and try to catch up or knock some things off various backlogs (I blinked and went from being behind 30-40ish Boruto episodes to 70ish, so maybe I should knock some of that back )

I've heard good things about Vinland Saga, though I'm not sure I want to sign myself up for another Berserk. Kanata no Astra sounds like a cool premise. Dr. Stone might be good. That's about it.

The first episode (a double episode) for Kanata no Astra is out right now. Looks like it leans more heavily "anime" than not.

The first ep of Dr Stone is out but I'm too busy lol'ing at Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo/O Maidens In Your Savage Season to watch it yet

Dr Stone 1

The first ten minutes were awesome, the last ten were kinda boring but necessary to move the story forward.

Enen no Shouboutai/Fire Force was a little interesting. It's basically if your local firemen were a dungeons and dragons party. High-quality animation too.

I'm not sure I'll stick with it but I'm at least gonna watch one or two more to see if the quality sticks

Vinland Saga dropped three episodes today

Dr. Stone's concept is cool, but the characters are so cliched and over-the-top shounen anime-ish it's bordering on parody, it's way too much for me. I don't think I'm going to keep watching.

Yeah, I could absolutely see myself dropping Dr Stone if they don't up their game a bit.

Vinland Saga 1

The animation and attention to detail is top notch. I'd actually liken the story more to Angolmois instead of Berserk, the violence is closer to Berserk (no sexual violence but it is Vikings so presumably there's pillaging at some point)

BTW, if you are interested in watching Vinland Saga, I can just hold back and watch at your pace, I'm in no rush with it

Good timing, just watched the first one!  So far I'd keep going. Since I'm not watching anything else so far other than finishing up Mob, if they just released 3 to start with and are slowing down to a once a week pace, I can probably catch up in a week or two.

Dr Stone 2

This was a little more interesting

Joshikousei no Mudazukai 2 is funny as fuck. The one manga artist girl has her art critiqued, then has a dream where all the art critiques end up part of the story, then she looks at the manga she drew in elementary and is horrified at how nonsensical it is.

Is it recommendation-level?

I think this one is more of a "mileage may vary."

Okay, cool. I don't think I'm going to bother for anything less than a full recommendation this season.

I might recommend episode 2 just because you draw and are a story person too so you'd probably find it funny, but it doesn't feel like the whole thing is recommendable (the main character's dream is to be popular with guys in high school but she accidentally went to a girl's-only school instead, so it's lot of high school hijinx and wasting time)
