Unfortunate Media Mistakes

Rather than clog the random thoughts thread, a thread just for those unfortunate goofs by the media.

I don't have a video, sadly, but on the news a few nights ago about the LHC, the news reader said 'Higgs Boston Particle'.

In my mind, one of the all-time goofs, this from KTVU in San Francisco. This was after Asiana Flight 214 crashed at San Francisco International Airport.

I think no round-up of media SNAFUs is complete without listening to some of On the Media's yearly coffee klatch with Craig Silverman from Regret the Error, but then I am a GIANT inside-media-baseball nerd.

See, I'm still enough in the competitive swimming mindset that my first thought was "WTF is up with that shammy pattern" and my second thought was "I see that the major swimwear companies are still manufacturing items with patterns that clash with themselves."

Okay, not quite the media - but someone's getting fired over this.

Because of an editing error, an article on Monday about a theological battle being fought by Muslim imams and scholars in the West against the Islamic State misstated the Snapchat handle used by Suhaib Webb, one of the Muslim leaders speaking out. It is imamsuhaibwebb, not Pimpin4Paradise786.

Holy crap.

Reminds me of a rule in the undergrad print journalism classes where I went to grad school, that if any name was misspelled or in correctly capitalized or if any other such error occurred regarding names or facts in student papers/projects, the student got an automatic F on the paper.

Many of the undergrad journalism majors thought this was highly unfair. The profs said it was not, for reasons like the above. I agree with the profs.

This isn't so much of a gaffe as it is a "please be aware of what you're saying" issue. There's a male diver for the US whose name is Steele Johnson. I'm sure I can stop there and you can think of where this is going.

So last night, NBC covered the men's platform diving qualifications. Top 18 move onto the next round. Johnson came in 18th. The NBC announcer said, "Steele Johnson is the last man in." And my inner 12 year old made me burst out laughing.
