Enail, I think the ads here are going off the browsing history of the visitor. I just refreshed a dozen times to test, and got carpet, uhaul, and lowes, all related to my recent searches post-homebuying, 2 clothing stores I've visited in the last week, and then some generic ads for Staples and local restaurants.

I get a weird mix of "Meet Asian Hotties", clothes, programming related stuff, and the occasional financial services ad, pest control, which matches most of my search history (Burma refugee issues, need a dress for a wedding, fuck you SAS quit giving me that error message, cost effective wire transfers, drug resistant malaria regions)

This reminds me of something that amuses me about targeted advertising, or rather, targeted advertising in its rather primitive current form. I have no interest in renting a second apartment in the building where I already live, and I'll shop at the clothing stores I see ads for regardless, since I've been a regular customer for years.

I do not see any ads for family style pet care on my screen, and that's something I actually might be interested in and had not previously been thinking about.

I sometimes see ads for Final Fantasy Record Keeper. The only reason I can think of for this is that I've installed Final Fantasy Record Keeper on my phone.

Ad type I'm most cognizant of is images of boobs, sometimes with faces above them, with some kind of caption indicating that the persons whose body parts are depicted are by no means in any position to withhold (or, therefore, to meaningfully give) consent. Not surprising given that my browsing history mostly consists of Dr Nerdlove and research on topics that come up on Dr Nerdlove.

Second most common type of ad I recall seeing, though, is for female-anatomy-specific hygiene and/or fertility products (one way or the other). Which is gross in other ways: browsing feminist-friendly spaces does not make me a woman, and browsing resources for prospective adopters does not make me sterile.

A friend of mine has noticed that she gets ads for fertility products/clinics all the time, despite the fact that she isn't interested at all. Her guess is some robot knows about her age and gender, and since she's supposed to have reached "that age", she's being bombarded with that kind of stuff. Pretty creepy really.

Me I get mostly clothes, and oddly enough lots of cars despite the fact that I don't drive and there isn't any car-related stuff in my browsing history at all.

I have a different browser that I have set in Arabic and for some reason it is confused about my gender because ads cycle between meet Ukrainian women, Muslim matrimonial sites that are definitely make targeted, weight loss products targeted to women, and Islamic couture.

I have thought about running ad block but I find the poor aim of the ads amusing

On my phone, I've been getting a rotating trifecta of "Is He Cheating on You?", "Save Your Marriage," and "Divorce & Breakup Coach." A whole narrative arc in banner ad form. Laughing

(And no, my relationship is not in trouble--don't even have a browsing history on my phone. No idea where the algorithm got those.)

On another forum I go to, the banner ads --way back in the day-- gave me ads for gay Naruto porn. Not that there's anything wrong with gay porn if you're into that, but rather what an odd choice of ad to run on a predominantly Lego-based forum. Shocked

It could very well make assumptions about browsing history though... it might show ads for "meet hot singles" because someone was browsing DNL Prime.

I tend to browse these forums on breaks at work, so my browsing history on this machine consists of a handful of forums, a handful of news sites (mostly tech-related) and Salesforce.com. I get ads for "meet hot Asian singles," Citrix GoToMeeting, Mortal Kombat, and Norton antivirus.
