Re: Politics and Current Events
Trump's already said he'd run independent, Bernie said he's not willing to split the vote.

Bill Clinton also encouraged Trump to run.

Re: Politics and Current Events
I want Trump versus Sanders. One for the memes and seeing everyone falling over themselves to be outraged about him, and the other for finally going after the banks.
On BLM: It's part safety issue(eg, Sanders' campaign is the closest to them politically, so they're the least likely to have people who will get hands-on when they jump the stage), part what Wondering said, as Sanders has a rep of reframing race as class issues and seeing police reform as broader than police-on-black brutality.

Just as a note: Perot didn't propel Clinton to victory in '92; he took votes from both sides.

Re: Politics and Current Events
So in Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is well known for having the personality of a robot and a void where a soul should be. There've been myths and legends attributed to people who've worked alongside him that he was a wicked sense of humour and one or two human emotions, but no one really believes it.
Then a few days ago while on campaign he gave a stump speech where he very animatedly mocked a political opponent, and reportedly he's been taking talking to regular people and taking selfies with them.
The collective response of the Canadian Media Reporters and Headline Writers, Canadian political followers and even his own staff was something along the likes of "What the fuck?" I saw a related headline on reddit and personally thought it was a link to a satire site.
Weird times in Canada keep getting weirder

I thought he implanted a personality chip a while back, actually, I've seen smiles a few times! And he's been wearing plaid shirts a lot, too.

Maybe this is Harper 2.0? The droid's manufacturers finally got the personality add-on working?

Re: Politics and Current Events
That is some reserved plaid though. I was thinking like large plaid in a nice flannel.
Also, here's Harper singing sweet caroline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xJLyLxFmwI - now I really want his rendition of Itsy Bitsy Deficits.

Re: Politics and Current Events
In current events, Pope Francis has said that for the coming liturgical year (which is a "year of mercy"), priests can forgive those Catholics involved in abortions.
Which won't have too much of a functional impact for Catholics in the US, where most bishops already allow this, but the message from the top is what I've come to expect from Francis: Compassion, not condemnation. I've read speculation that Francis will extend this indefinitely after the year of mercy is up. Here's hoping.

I'm on wiki reading the entries for every Prime Minister in Canadian history
Is this what being old and boring is like?

(Actually one thing I'll say from reading this stuff, if the answer to "Why does Stephen Harper follow the ideology he does" is "Pierre Trudeau", the answer to "Why does Stephen Harper rule his party the way he does?" is "Jean Chretien.")

Re: Politics and Current Events
I fear there's a troublingly high possibility that Trump will become the next president. I comfort myself by imagining that as president, while he would emit a nearly constant stream of stupid and/or terrible words, he would have only an average amount of stupid and/or terrible actions. In other words that he would mostly be an embarrassing and obnoxious blowhard, but that the country would survive.
